AI for Edu Featured Resource: Khanmigo

By Rachel Caldwell, Power2Parent

Khanmigo is an AI virtual tutor and teaching assistant that uses ChatGPT-4 to interact with users in student or teacher mode. The tool, which is in its Beta testing phase, was developed by Khan Academy.

Khanmigo can interact with students as a historical character, serve as a writing coach, engage in debate, and provide immediate computer coding instruction. Teachers can use the tool to assist with lesson planning.

In the words of CEO Sal Khan, Khanmigo is a ‘tool for learning, not cheating.’ In a video hosted on the Khan Academy website, he describes Khanmigo as a tutor who nudges the student towards figuring out the answer to his problem as opposed to giving him the answer.

Currently, users must be at least 18 years old to create an account. A monthly donation of $9 or an annual donation of $99 is required to use the tool. A school district pilot program is available for a limited number of educators and administrators.

Khan Academy, an American educational nonprofit that seeks to provide a free, world-class education to students anywhere, provides free online courses to users. Courses cover math, arts and humanities, reading, language arts, science, economics, and computing. Test prep and life skills offerings are also available.
